Two tourists dead and two Australians injured after speedboat capsizes near Koh Samui in Thailand
Two people have died and two Australians have been injured after a speedboat carrying 36 people capsized near Koh Samui in Thailand yesterday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed two Australians were on board.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to two Australians injured as a result of a speed boat accident off Koh Samui, Thailand on 26 May,” the statement read.

“The Australian Embassy in Bangkok is working closely with Thai authorities to confirm whether any other Australians may have been involved in the incident and stand ready to provide consular assistance should this be required.

“Due to privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further information.”

The boat is believed to have flipped over yesterday afternoon, after it was hit by a wave on its way back to the popular tourist island from Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park.

“Weather was the cause of the accident because it created high waves, but the boat was also being driven at a high speed,” Apichart Boonsriro, the commander of Surat Thani provincial police, told AFP.

It was carrying 32 tourists, three boat operators and one tour guide.

It is believed at least one passenger is still unaccounted for.

A district chief, Paiboon Omark, told AFP a British woman and a German woman are among those deceased.

The British Foreign Office said they were “supporting the family of a British woman who has sadly died following a boat accident near Koh Samui, Thailand.”

“Another British national has received treatment in hospital for injuries suffered in the same incident. We remain in contact with local authorities in Thailand for further information.”

The Australians who were on board are yet to be identified.
